Once you know what you want to do, it’s time to think of a name. There are a few caveats to consider when picking out a name for your new Reddit community:
- No one else can have the same name.
- You can’t change it ever. Once you’ve made it, that’s the name forever.
- It must be between three and 21 characters in length.
- The underscore is the only special character that can be used.
After you choose a name, you’ll decide if your subreddit will be open to the public, restricted to a certain group of people, or private.
- Anyone can use public subreddits. Anyone can join, post, and look at the information.
- Restricted subreddits have rules about who can post.
- Private subreddits are closed to the broader Reddit community and require special permission to join.
- How you plan to run your community will determine which one you choose.
Lastly, if your community will be about posting adult content, you need to mark the checkbox to let people know. What is content for adults? “Adult” content usually includes things like nudity, swearing, violence, anything sexual, or anything you wouldn’t want to be seen looking at at work or in the library. Some Reddit users don’t want to see adult content, so they turn it off. If you don’t make your subreddit NSFW and post adult content, Reddit can and will change it for you.
How To Make Your Own Subreddit On Mobile?
Now that you’ve thought about what your subreddit will be about, you can set it up. Here’s how you get it done:
On desktop
- Click on the drop-down menu under “Home” or “Your Name” to choose what you want to do.
- Choose Create Community or Create a Community.
- In the text box on the menu that comes up, type the name of your subreddit.
- Choose the radio button that matches how private you want your community to be.
- If you want to make a subreddit that is not safe for work, click the box at the bottom.
- Make sure your subreddit name is spelled the way you want it to be. You won’t be able to make any changes.
- In the bottom right corner, click Create Community.
On mobile
- Choose either the “Overflow” menu in the upper-left corner or the “Profile” menu in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Make a group of people
- In the text box on the menu that comes up, type the name of your subreddit.
- From the drop-down menu, choose how private you want your subreddit to be.
- If you want to make an NSFW subreddit, change the bottom switch.
- Make sure your subreddit name is spelled the way you want it to be. You won’t be able to make any changes.
