A slow data connection is usually temporary and caused by where you are or how busy the network is. Sometimes it goes away quickly, but sometimes it lasts for hours or even days.
Try these simple steps to see if they fix your slow mobile data before you call your mobile carrier’s technical support.
How To Speed Up Your Phone Internet? 5 Quick Steps
1. Restart Your Phone
This seems like an old-fashioned solution, but it usually works. Cellular slow data speeds should be fixed by turning off and on your phone. This is especially true if you haven’t turned it off in a while.
If you’re in a hurry, try putting your phone in airplane mode first. But it’s always a good idea to start from scratch.
It’s easy to restart your phone. Here are the steps to take for your device:
- On an iPhone without a Home button, press and hold the side button and either the Volume Up or Volume
- Down button until Slide to Power Off appears. Hold the side button again after turning off your iPhone to turn it back on.
- If you have an iPhone with a Home button, hold the side button (usually on the right side of the phone or at the top of older phones) until Slide to Power Off appears on the screen.
- For most Android phones, you need to hold the Power button until the power options appear on the screen, then tap Restart. If you don’t see Restart, choose Power off, then hold Power again to turn your phone back on.
- No matter your phone, it’s best to wait a few minutes before turning it back on.
2. Move To A Different Location
Many physical things can make LTE or 5G slow. Some of these are the weather, the amount of traffic on networks, and even solar activity. But geography and buildings are the most important.
If you are in a remote area or if there are a lot of hills, mountains, or valleys around you, your signal will probably be weak.
If the area around you is one of these extremes, try to move to a place with more even ground.
The same is true when you are inside a building. You might be in the middle of a city with lots of people and have full bars on your phone, then wonder why your data is so slow when you go into certain buildings.
Your data signal can be bad if you are underground or surrounded by concrete in a building like a basement.
If you’re having problems with your data speed that only started in one place, try going elsewhere. You may need to leave the building you’re in or drive a few miles away. This may not be convenient, but it’s a good way to figure out what’s wrong with your speed.
If you call for help, tech support will probably tell you to do this step anyway.

3. Update And Disable Network-Heavy Apps

If this happens, you’ll need to do some digging to find out what, if anything, is using up your bandwidth. If something is wrong, you can stop the app from using your cellular data connection or remove it from your phone.
When the internet on your iPhone is slow, go to Settings > Cellular and use the list to stop any app from using your cellular data connection.
On Android, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile network (SIMs on Android 12) > App data usage. Tap an app, and then move the Background data slider to the left to turn it off. This will stop that app from using data in the background.
4. Disable Data Saver Or Low Data Mode
Both Android and iPhone have modes that help you use fewer data. These are helpful if you have a limited amount of data, but if you turn them on by accident, they can make your mobile connection seem slower than it is. Try turning off these modes to see if everything moves more quickly.
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver on an Android phone. If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode to find a similar setting called Low Data Mode.
If you’re worried about how much data you use, turn these back on after a while. You should be able to tell whether or not this setting is slowing down your mobile data. It saves time by not loading images until you tap on them or pausing background sync until you open an app.
5. Remember Your Data Cap
Don’t forget that your mobile data limit is probably between a few and a few dozen gigabytes. Usually, your mobile carrier will slow your connection if you exceed that limit (instead of expensive overages).
Even people with plans that say they are “unlimited” will usually experience throttling or “deprioritization” when the network is busy, especially after they reach a certain limit.
This might be the cause when you experience slow mobile internet. If you’ve used all of your high-speed data, you’ll have to wait until your bill cycle starts over or buy more.
Knowing how much data you can use before your carrier drops you down to a much slower connection speed is good. Check your account through the company’s website or mobile app if you’re not sure.
